Home School Groups
Our science and technology center currently offers home school group specials. Home school groups can visit our center to enhance their science and technology curriculum by allowing their students to participate in hands-on, standards based activities that include: Robotics, Life Science, Forensic Science, Paleontology, Astronomy and more. Classes are $25 per student and $18 for 2 or more siblings. Payments are to be made at least one week prior to each class. Group discounts are available. Customized classes, days, and times are available for interested groups. Please contact us for more information regarding customized classes. If minimum student interest is not met (6 students) class will be cancelled and a refund will be issued. Enrollment forms can be downloaded here
Home School Wednesdays
-
Wednesday Home School classes start March 3, 2010 from 11:30am-12:30pm.
-
Each class is held in 5 week modules. The next module planned is Life Science.
Technology 101
March 3, 2010- March 31, 2010
In this course students are introduced to the exciting realm of engineering and robotics as they learn programming, building, and more! The class focuses on building and programming robots using the Lego Mindstorm robotic platforms. Students are introduced to functions of electric cells, lamps, switches and conductive materials. Students learn the difference between insulators, conductors are examined, and a short circuit is demonstrated. Students construct and learn the difference between series and parallel circuits and also experiment with solar cells and learn how they are used as alternate energy sources.
Life Science 101
April 7, 2010- May 5, 2010
Using digital microscopes and live specimens, students examine and study animal and plant behavior and learn about the planet's efficient recyclers by growing and studying fungi. Students learn the different characteristics of living things and understand the definition of an organism.]Students also study and learn the different characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates. Students are also introduced to habitats, adaptations, and life cycles. From tadpoles becoming frogs, and caterpillars becoming butterflies. Students learn how animals change and grow throughout their life cycles as well as their habitats and adaptation abilities.
Life Science and Biology
PeeWee Paleontologist
Ages 5-7
This hands-on prehistoric adventure uses visual materials, fossil replicas, fossils and scale models, and dino-digs to show the characteristics distinguishing dinosaurs, their world and what we know about them. Students will explore dinosaur paleontology and take virtual field trips across prehistoric lands long forgotten in search of ancient fossils. Like Museum paleontologists, students make their way into their very own paleontology laboratory as they attempt to reconstruct the lives of dinosaurs based on skeletal and environmental clues.
The Dino Dig is recommended for ages 5 and up with no previous experience needed. Children under 5 may participate if assisted by an adult.
Habitats, Adaptations, and Life Cycles
Habitats, adaptations, and life cycles. From tadpoles becoming frogs, and caterpillars becoming butterflies. Students learn how animals change and grow throughout their life cycles as well as their habitats and adaptation abilities.
Living Organisms
Using digital microscopes students examine and study animal and plant behavior and learn about the planet's efficient recyclers by growing and studying fungi. Students learn the different characteristics of living things and understand the definition of an organism.]Students also study and learn the different characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates.
Plants, Plants and more Plants
Ages 8+
Students witness the wonder of plants and create easy-to-maintain mini greenhouses. From carnivorous plants with their ability to capture prey using various methods such as sticky secretions and moving jaws to plants that are sensitive to darkness and touch…
Vertebrates and Invertebrates
Planaria, living vinegar eel,
Entomology-The amazing world of insects!
Students learn to identify several beneficial insects and spiders, including predators and pollinators, then discuss ways that the insects and spiders that they observed are adapted to be pollinators or predators. Student teams will present their findings and research to the class.
Engineering 101
Ages 5-7
Simple Machines
Ages 5-7
Intro to Electronics
Ages 5-7
Our introduction to Electrionics course makes learning electronics easy and fun! Students create a short wave radio, build a solar powered racing car and experiment with building blocks with snaps that introduces young experimenters to switch blocks, lamp blocks, battery blocks, and different length wire blocks.
Simple Circuits
Ages 8+
An excellent introduction to building simple circuits. Students learn the functions of electric cells, lamps, switches and conductive materials. The differences between insulators and conductors are examined and a short circuit is demonstrated. Students construct and learn the difference between series and parallel circuits. Students also experiment with solar cells and learn how they are used as alternate energy sources.
Computing Basics
Ages 5-7
- Intro to SCRATCH programming
Computing 101
Ages 11+
- Virtual world/ game creation
- Intro to ALICE
Intro to Robotics
Ages 8+
|
Students are introduced to the exciting realm of robotics as they learn programming, building, and more! The class focuses on how to build and program the Lego Mindstorms NXT and RCX robot kits. This is a great preparatory class for students interested in entering Lego based classes and competitions such as the FIRST LEGO League (FLL). Students also participate in Lego Sumo-bot wrestling, a contest where students create autonomous LEGO robots capable of pushing or flipping an opposing robot out of a circular ring. The first robot to touch the floor outside of the ring loses. The last robot remaining in the ring wins.

ASTRONOMY
NASA LCROSS Mission
Our Moon
Field trip to the moon
Lunar Colony Design
Ages 11+
Our Solar System
Mystery Chemical Identification
Students conduct chemical tests on 4 household products to demonstrate their chemical characteristics.
Ages 8+
Chemiluminescence
Ages 5-7
Ever wondered how lighting bugs or fireflies light up? Chemiluminescence is the BIG word for chemical reactions that produce light. These awesome series of experiments will help your students learn how certain chemical reactions release energy in the form of light.
“Who Done it?”
Ages 8+
This inquiry-based activity lets students analyze suspects' hair samples to determine the culprit in a stolen candy mystery. Students also use techniques similar to those used by forensic scientists to examine hair from various species. Information gathered during the examinations is then used to identify a hair of unknown origin.
Fingerprinting 101
Ages 5 -7
Students learn to fingerprint one another on a permanent card using standard police methodology, then compare their prints to the chart depicting the 9 standard fingerprint patterns.
Forensic Entomology
Ages 11+
Dental Forensics
Ages 5-7
Your little crime solvers will explore the life of being a forensic dentist as they assist in crime solving by studying teeth and teeth impressions…
